Friday Crap Roundup XXX

It’s been nearly a month since the last FCR. One would think I’d have plenty to write about today, but eh, not so much. Dredging the Internet for the awesome and the absurd hasn’t been a real high priority lately.

Varuna

Although this article on Proto-Indo-European clearly falls into the former category.

Still, there’s enough going on to warrant a 30th installment.

Adventures in Photoplasty

A few weeks ago I downloaded a copy of GIMP 2.8. What is that, you ask? Well, it’s a program like Photoshop, only it’s free. Just remember to uninstall all the crap it comes with when you download it. We’re talking a lot of crap, definitely not for the squeamish or computer illiterate.

I got it so I could participate in the Photoplasty projects over at Cracked. Yes, I’m still fixing to have an article published there one of these days, but despite my rudimentary image manipulation skills I enjoy making memes too. So far it seems to be working out well, as the very first “plasty” I ever made made the cut. It’s at #11 in the slideshow. I didn’t win the $100 this time, but given the caliber of Photoshop artists who frequent these contests (read: pretty damn good) I feel honored to be nominated. Yes, even though they credited my work to someone else at first. Relax, that’s fixed now.

More to come on this front I’m sure ….

Not the Best

Boise Weekly announced the Best of Boise 2013 winners earlier this week. Despite my best efforts SB came up empty-handed. That’s what I get for coming late to the party.

Turns out many of the folks I supported were also left on the outside looking in. Sure, The Record Exchange and Flying Pie Pizzaria won their respective categories yet again, but to say those are no-brainer choices is the understatement of the century.

The Command Center is right on the edge of the Pie’s delivery area, a fact I don’t exploit enough.

Next year I’ll start campaigning early. Hopefully I’ll have a readership then too.

Track of the Week

I’m not sure if I like this one or not. It’s clunky as hell at times …

… but when it’s on, so smooth.
