History Wednesday: Going to the Lordy

If history teaches us nothing else, it teaches us the notion of “the good old days” is a myth and a sham. Need proof? Consider Charles Guiteau. He was a piece of work for the ages, one who put our contemporary wingnuts to shame.

David Koresh had nothing on this guy.

Indeed, the 1881 series of events which led to Guiteau’s place in history look absolutely preposterous when viewed through the lenses of today. Yet there they are.

Unexploded Ordnance and Other Road Hazards

Hey look, it’s back.

Wait, what did you think I was talking about?

Well, actually it never left. It just hasn’t made a lot of noise recently. That is, until now.

I’m Loathing It

Given my disdain for anything resembling cooking, it’s a wonder I don’t eat out a lot more than I do. All I can say is I’m glad to live in an age of microwaves.

Otherwise I would have been too downtrodden even by Dickensian standards.

For a myriad of reasons, I avoid McDonald’s like the plague. If I had my druthers, I wouldn’t set foot in the place ever again. Unfortunately they have a playground, and I have an eight-year-old daughter.

Friday Crap Roundup XXVIII

It’s Friday, and the troglodytes regulars over at Reddit have discovered me!

redditspammer

Turns out Σ thinks posts about cars suck too.

A “spammer” eh? Damn. Imagine the reaming I’d get over there if I actually posted in the same category more than once a week.

History Wednesday: Bursts of Color

Remember Beanie Babies? You know, those stuffed animals that were hot for a couple minutes back in the 1990s before their bubble of “all new materials” burst? They had names such as “Saddle the Horse,” “Leftovers the Turkey” and “Quebec Iris Versicolor the Bear.”

Remember them? Good! Because today’s History Wednesday isn’t about them.

History Wednesday: Revolution, Eh?

Ever wonder how the American Revolution created Canada?

'Starman'_emblem_(Rush_'2112'_album)

No, seriously.

Well, as it turns out the Continental Army was at least as interested in Canada as it was in its own jurisdictions, at least at first. That had some far-reaching consequences. So let’s take a look, eh? Beauty!

Cauterized Culinary Treats

After six months and nearly 200 posts, it’s hard to believe I haven’t touched on all of my major weaknesses and eccentricities here at SB at least once. Yet much to my surprise, today I found a topic largely unmentioned.

Yes, much scarier than purported “real ghosts.”

My friends, the bhut jolokia is not to be trifled with.

History Wednesday: Some More Healthy Eating

S’mores are awesome. I would have definitely eaten more of them as a kid had I not despised camping so much.

Still, there’s plenty of history in that three-ingredient delicacy. Like most things, a good portion of that history is a bit off.

Fight Verbal Diarrhea!

Earlier today I came across a blog which despite having excellent subject matter and multimedia content was damn near impossible to read. The reason? Well, along with the obscene number of grammatical errors, run-on sentences and completely unnecessary transitions, the writer just didn’t know when to shut the hell up and get to the point.

I mean, I go off on tangents from time to time, but damn ….

There’s way too much of this out there in my humble opinion. Frankly I think English education has a lot to do with it.

Friday Crap Roundup XXV

I’ve somehow made it to the 25th FCR. That’s nearly half a year of these posts. Sneferu was a mere kitten when I started this blog. Today’s he’s a year old.

And he can hardly contain himself.

We’ve got a few more weeks until Djoser’s birthday in October. I’m sure that will be equally exciting. In the meantime sit back and enjoy the FCR.
