Friday Crap Roundup XXXIII: Crap I Like

When I started SB nearly a year ago the intent was to supplement what I wrote at Cracked. Unfortunately, as of today said contributions at Cracked comprise entirely of a single Photoplasty entry. I haven’t even sent them a proposal in months. It’s very much a lack of desire on my part, and also because I think they’ve slipped a bit recently. Don’t get me wrong, they still produce great stuff from time to time. I’m just not “feeling” them as much anymore.

Too many movie and video game articles I frankly don’t give a rat’s ass about.

That said, there’s plenty of other good stuff out there. That’s a good thing, given what kind of a slacker I am.

Friday Crap Roundup XXXI

I’m feeling better than I was a couple days ago. The need for drugs has subsided. The same holds true for Sneferu, who finished a three-week regimen of antibiotics yesterday. In other words, no more shoving little pink pills down a cat’s throat every damn day.

He might actually appreciate that.

I know I do ….

The Abysmal Quality of Spam

Even after several months SB continues to get hits on the posts “Messing With Spammers” and “Messing With Spammers, Part Deux.” Seems the gr8tits2play racket is alive and well.

What’s really scary is that Gr8tits2play.org got more ad clicks than SB this month.

I’d write more about dating scams, but I haven’t been trolling Craigslist recently.

Unexploded Ordnance and Other Road Hazards

Hey look, it’s back.

Wait, what did you think I was talking about?

Well, actually it never left. It just hasn’t made a lot of noise recently. That is, until now.

Cars I Miss

Like many of you I’ve had quite a few cars since I got my driver’s license way back in 1988. Some are remembered more fondly than others. I’d have to say my current ride, a 2004 Ford Focus, is somewhere around the middle of that list. What do I like most about it? It’s paid off.

And it hasn’t had full coverage since.

However, there are a couple vehicles from my past I’d love to have back.

Writing Basics, With Pictures!

I have a nasty habit of over-thinking things. Like in high school, when I’d do things like turn the prospect of an innocuous prom date into a 60-year commitment in my head.

And then forget about the damn thing anyway.

And so it is with blog entries. No one said I had to write Pulitzer Prize-winning material every damn day. So with that in mind, today’s installment of “Lane Tells You How to Write!” keeps things simple.

History Wednesday: Some More Healthy Eating

S’mores are awesome. I would have definitely eaten more of them as a kid had I not despised camping so much.

Still, there’s plenty of history in that three-ingredient delicacy. Like most things, a good portion of that history is a bit off.

Gaines No Longer

For the better part of my childhood I liberally used Yiddish insults and similar phrases in everyday speech. You know, terms such as “schmuck,” “putz,” “schmendrick” and “chutzpah.”

To this day I use the initials “FEH” when I log a video game high score.

I grew up in the 2T and knew a grand total of zero Jews during my childhood. How the the hell did I pick this habit up?

Why, Mad magazine of course.

Geared Up for Frustration

There’s no doubt about it, Boise is a great town for bicycles. Now while one doesn’t see the waves of two-wheeled humanity one would expect in places like Beijing, bicycles remain very popular. Yup, that includes the occasional motorized bicycle.

Insane gas mileage. Under $1,000 new. 30 mph top speed. No special licensing required in Idaho.

Although I’m not ready for the motorized version just yet, a couple months ago I figured it was a good idea to get back on this bandwagon.

Turns out I’m still trying.

Friday Crap Roundup XXIII

My fundamental quandary, conveniently encapsulated in flow chart form:

Oh Mr. Flow Chart, you have no idea ….

In spite of it all, I still have the energy and desire to write the FCR, albeit a short one this week.
