Lane Tells You How To Write!

This is SB’s 150th post since its launch in February. Some of you are no doubt asking, “Lane, how the hell did you write 150 original posts in such a short time?”

Well, it’s worth noting that SB isn’t my first writing gig by a long shot. I’ve been published in several places over the past 20 years or so. I worked as an acquisitions editor for a small publishing house in Philadelphia. While there a few years ago I helped produce a biography called From Bordello to Ballot Box. I think it’s safe to say I know what I’m doing.

So wanna write like me? The following is by no means an exhaustive how-to, but it should get you started.

Selling Out To the Yahoos

There was good news of of sorts today. Rick Perry, the longtime yahoo Texas governor, announced he would not run for re-election in 2014. Whatever happens next, I strongly suspect Texas will be the better for it. Come to think of it, he’s not the only yahoo worthy of retirement.

But here in Idaho, I don’t think we’re that lucky.

And that right there is already more about politics than I wanted to write about.

Constantly Upgrading … Maybe

My experience is Sunday is the hardest day to write. It has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with an utter lack of stimulus. So today I’m out and about. While I love my Chromebook, its battery life leaves something to be desired. But hey, no pressure!

Fortunately today, I was able to catch up with an old friend.

Anticlimax on Benjamin

Nine days until 15 July. That’s all I have left until I turn 40. As if that wasn’t weighing on me heavily enough, by sheer coincidence my driver’s license was set to expire that day as well. Like many people, I’ve come to look forward to a trip to the DMV in the much the same way I look forward to a Drano colonic. The midlife crisis element made it just that much worse.

As the late, great Leslie Nielsen might have said, it left me hollow.

Nevertheless, yesterday I ventured out to the Ada County offices on Benjamin Lane to keep myself legal and stuff. Hell, at least it gave me good material to write about over the weekend.

Or so I thought anyway ….

Friday Crap Roundup XXI

Wow, it’s Friday already? This week went by quick.

I guess that’s what happens when you sleep through it.

Well, I suppose I should get started with this week’s FCR, or something ….

In Search of a Larger Stream

I spent today doing something resembling real work. Shocking, isn’t it?

Over the past 24 hours SB and my other sites have earned a grand total of … 13 cents. Since I don’t live in Bangladesh, I need to improve upon that number.

Contrary to popular belief, Idaho isn’t that cheap.

Unfortunately, I’ve run into some problems ….

Friday Crap Roundup XIX

It’s the longest day of the year! Well, it is if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere.

Anyway, a good many of you get to read the 19th installment of the FCR by daylight.

The Stuffed Pilgrimage

I think my daughter and I solved the Beachy issue from a few days back. Although she wanted me to refer to her by her real name here, her mother vetoed that. Fortunately we’ve come up with a solution which should satisfy everyone. She has agreed to be known here on SB simply as “Σ.” If you like you can call her Sigma. Along those lines, my twin nieces – who are toddlers living in the Portland, Oregon, area – will be henceforth known as “π” and “μ” respectively.

No, none of us are even remotely Greek. Just work with me here.

This is a fortuitous turn of events, since all three young ladies figure into today’s narrative.

Friday Crap Roundup XVII

Wow, there’s not much to go on for today’s FCR. Although most of my week has been monopolized by an eight-year-old, my Facebook feed usually provides more than enough weirdness for me. Not this week. It’s almost as if everyone was as lethargic as my daughter and I were out at Camel’s Back Park this afternoon. Idahoans generally don’t do well in hot, humid conditions.

Tales From Parental Purgatory

I’m back in the 2T this weekend. For a variety of reasons I’m staying longer than normal this time. Among other things, Beachy is days away from closing the book on second grade for good.

That’s the exciting part. The decidedly unexciting part is thankfully behind me.
